Rumba is a secular genre of Cuban music involving dance, percussion, and song. It originated during the late 19th century by Afro-Cuban workers in the northern regions of Cuba, mainly the poor neighbourhoods of Havana and Matanzas. However, Rumba is not one single style and the term is used to refer to three main subgenres (guaguancó, columbia, and yambú) all of which are Cuban musical styles of direct African. These syncretic styles would later be referred to as "rumba", a word that also meant "party".
